WOLF TRIP 2008
5-days: $1239 August 4-8
Idaho's Lower Salmon River
Second Deepest Gorge in North America
Call of the Wild
Owhoooo... No animal embodies the call of nature more profoundly than the howling of a wild wolf pack. Such beauty, elegance, and power that oozes from this animal is a part of the inspired reason it became an important icon and spirit guide to many native peoples.
"He'me," is what the Nez Perce Indians call the gray wolf (Canis lupus). They respect the wolf with esteemed honor because it is a shrewd hunter and maintaines strong family bonds. As a representative of their culture, the wolf serves as a strong connection to nature and in essence, the foundational ways of being a Nez Perce.
Since the successful reintroduction of wolves into Idaho, the Nez Perce have been able to mend the circle of their sacred tie to He'me. It has allowed them to get some of their medicine back, and a chance to demystify the character of the wolf.
How would you like to see wolves up close and personal? Or learn more about wolf ecology and demystify it's character for yourself? We will visit WERC - "Wolf Education and Research Center," in Winchester, Idaho, on the first day of our trip. There, you will be able to experience wild wolves face to face. What better way to learn why Little Red Riding Hood was wrong?
Tamed by enclosure, but wild by nature. The 20 acres of high fences confine this wolf pack to within a viewable area, but never the less, these animals are still wild on the inside. Unlike national parks or wilderness areas, only by visiting a professional wolf refuge can sightings be guaranteed. The experience of looking into the eyes of a wild wolf will eliminate any feeling of man made obstacles.
Wolf biology on the river. After your wolf encounter, we will take you down the lower gorge of the Salmon River. There, wolf biology and a bi-cultural presentation of the ecology and sociology of wolf packs will be taught. For 5-days of relaxation and informal discussion, we will float through one of North American's deepest canyons and ideal setting for transpersonal inspiration.
World class campsites & rapids. Can you think of a better blend of sand and water that is both white, yet offering both thrills and relaxation at the same time? Moderate rapids will energize your spirit, not scare you. Campsite beaches are exquisite enough to be even the envy of any native Hawiian Islander.
Trip professionals. A wildlife biologist/ecologist and spiritual elder Nez Perce representative will accompany this trip.
Trip size. Maximum of 10 people.
Price includes. WERC entrance fee and professional wildlife/cultural services.
Gary & Barb,
"The river was the highlight of our exploration of western USA. The whole concept of the wolves, meeting Levi, and flo floating down the Salmon was excellent. Your insights into the countryside made the trip extra special and we certainly feel we were the 'coolest' boats on the river."
- Martin, Donna, Danny & Oliver (the Australians)
